How to Decorate Around Blue Floor Tile When You Don't Like It

When a blue tile floor doesn't suit your tastes, the trick is to distract from the floor -- without clashing -- to create a room you'll enjoy. When it isn't feasible to change the floor, using a few designer strategies to diminish its effect in the room is your best strategy for living with it.

Use Neutral Colors

Decorating in neutral colors offers one of the simplest solutions to diminishing the blue tile floor. The enduring popularity of neutrals, including taupe, cream, white, tan, brown, black, beige and gray makes them good colors for changing a room. Using neutral color for major items of furniture, walls and rugs offers the convenience of being able to redecorate the room in any color scheme without clashing. White and cream have an expansive effect and can transform the room if the blue tile has a cold effect.

Area rugs will offer immediate relief by covering a significant amount of the blue tile. Even if the blue tile is in the bathroom, you can use large, washable rugs with nonslip backs designed for bathroom use to minimize the blue tile floor. Natural fiber rugs such as sisal work well to cover blue tile in high-traffic areas, including an entry or mudroom. In a living room or family room, a large area rug in a neutral color or coordinating solid color will shift the color balance. A patterned rug such as an oriental rug or rug with a contemporary bold pattern distracts from the blue tile.

Add a Bright Accent Color

A fiery orange or bright tangerine as an accent color for the room complements blue and will attract attention away from the blue floor. You can use the accent color for furniture, such as a chair, ottoman or side table. If you prefer earth tones, rust or burnt orange complements blue. Depending on the room, use the accent color for throw pillows, towels, curtains, vases, flower pots, wall art, rugs or other accessories such as storage baskets and trash cans. A bright accent color for pendant light fixtures or the shade for an arch lamp or other eye-catching lamps draws attention upward, away from the floor.

Walls and Vertical Effects

White walls and ceilings will brighten the room if the floor tiles are a deep shade of blue that makes the room look dark. Tan, light browns and beige give a warm look that can counteract the cool blue floor. Hanging floor-to-ceiling curtains or drapes -- even if the windows don't extend to the floor -- increases the vertical lines in the room to draw the eye upward. Stripes are particularly good for this effect. You can add stripes to the wall treatment by painting stripes or using striped wall paper, choosing an eye-catching color that works with the blue yet distracts from it, such as green, red, yellow or orange.
